Advertising my music video

As the original music video featured on Vevo, I think it will be necessary to advertise my music video on Vevo too. Vevo is a global institution owned and operated (in cooporation) by Universal Music Group, Google and Sony Music Entertainment. Vevo specializes in advertising music videos from two of the three major music labels; Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment. Although Evanescence worked with EMI (previously the forth label in "the major four" however it has now been sold to Universal Music Group), I feel Vevo will be a opportunistic way to advertise my music video. Evanescence obviously have a mass audience if they have previously worked with two of the three major labels therefore I think by advertising my music video on a global service, I can easily spread the word of my music video.

If I am going to advertise my music video via Vevo, I will use Vevo through the use of Youtube. Youtube is a global company that operates around the world; advertising many different ranges of music videos from all different kinds of genres. Evanescence have advertised their music videos through Vevo on Youtube therefore I think it will an effective way to advertise my music video. Youtube is owned by Google (which, in comparison owns Vevo), seen as though Evanescence is aimed at a mass audience, Youtube will be an extremely good opportunity to advertise my music video.

Evanescence also advertise their music on iTunes. iTunes is a great way to advertise their music because it is open to all different genres, interests and styles of music. Initially developed by Bill Kincaid, SoundJam MP was soon changed to iTunes when Apple purchased it in 2000. Apple is a global company which is easy access for anyone anywhere around the world. iTunes mainly specializes in music audio rather than music videos however you can watch music video via iTunes and then download them onto your iPhone.

Music channels are a great way to advertise music videos due to them being cheap and easily accessible by a mass audience. As of August 2013, approximately 97,654,000 American households received MTV therefore this is a brilliant place to advertise my music video. Sony Music Entertainment, Universal and Warner Brothers all advertise their music through music channels.

Facebook is as great way to advertise my music video because it is free to advertise. Although my institution is signed to a major music label and they can afford to advertise within big companies; I think Facebook is an extremely effective way to advertise my music video. This image shows the amount of people who use Facebook:
Facebook is extremely popular with teenagers, roughly 12 - 25; this applies to my music video. By advertising on Facebook, I will be primarily advertising my music video at the specific target audience my music video is aimed at.

Costume Moodboard

Here is my costume mood board. As you can see, the pictures are very ghostly. When creating my music video, I will keep referring back to these images as I want to achieve a modern day ghostly effect for my music video.

The dresses that feature in my costume mood board are conventional for horror movies which is what I want to achieve in my music video. However my music video is not a horror but I want to portray feelings of confusion and unsteadiness from my female protagonist to the audience.

This is what I would like the males in my music video to wear. The male protagonist (who features in the narrative of my music video) will wear either a denim jacket or a leather jacket. I want him to look casual and normal; this will contrast highly with my female protagonist's outfit therefore the audience will focus more on my female protagonist because her outfit will be abnormal to my audience's norms and values.

The band members who are going to feature in my music video will be wearing leather jackets and checked shirts.
  • The lead singer will be wearing a leather jacket with necklaces around his neck. He will be wearing tight black jeans with black converse style shoes.
  • The drummer will be wearing a (red or green) checked shirt; it will be buttoned up. Although the audience will be not able to see his legs and feet, he will also be wearing tight black jeans and black converse style shoes. The drummer of my band my also be wearing a red or green bandanna around his head.
  • The guitarist will be wearing a denim jacket and a dark green t-shirt underneath;. again, with tight black jeans on and black converse style shoes. He will also have necklaces around his neck with a lot of bracelets on.

Secondary Influences

This is a mood board of secondary influences. These techniques and effects I may not include in my music video however I think they are effective. These music videos are all extremely successful and have included multiple different technique and elements that are extremely effective.

Music Video Techniques and Influences

These are the three music videos that are a key influence for me when creating my final music video. I have highlighted all different aspects, techniques and effects that these all contain that can therefore help when finally producing my music video. These are all very successful music videos therefore by taking inspiration and ideas from these music videos, I can hopefully produce a successful music video too.

Storyboard

Narrative Analysis

The music video I am analyzing is Valerie by The Zutons.

This music video supports Tim O’Sullivan’s approach as he argued that all music videos tell a narrative story. This music video tells a narrative story about a young man (the protagonist) in prison missing his girlfriend. The protagonist is doing chores during his time in prison such as, getting put in solitary confinements and escaping prison. Baring in mind this song is about his girlfriend or lover Valerie, the audience does not actually meet her.

This music video also supports the approach of Kate Domaille who argued that every story ever told can fit into one of eight narrative types. This music video fits into the narrative type: Romeo and Juliet. This is shown through the lyrics and the story the lyrics connote to the audience. There is a typical woman (who the audience are unaware of) and the typical man (the protagonist) who is singing a song to his female lover ‘Valerie’. They are obviously in love however he cannot see her as he is in prison.

This music video follows the work of Sven Carlsson, who argued that music videos in general fall into two rough groups: performance and conceptual clips. This music video falls into the category of performance as the majority of this clip consists of the band (The Zutons) performing whilst supporting the narrative of their music video. Performance can be of three types: song performance, dance performance and instrumental performance. My music video falls into the song performance category as it mostly features this band singing their song. However this music video does have a narrative to link in with the background music therefore it can also fall into the narrative category.

This music video follows the approach of Bordwell and Thompson’s fabula. The fabula is the story; all the events in the narrative that the audience see and infer. This fabula is the chronological series of events throughout the narrative of the music video. The protagonist starts off behind bars, then himself and his cell mates eventually escape from prison, go to the theatre and perform on the stage in front of no audience.

Pam Cook argued that the classic narrative system should require: the linearity of cause and effect within an overall trajectory of enigma resolution, a high degree of narrative closure and a fictional world that contains verisimilitude especially governed by spatial and temporal coherence. This music video follows the idea of having a fictional world that contains verisimilitude; it is obvious to the audience where the protagonist and his friends are (in prison). However it does not follow the other aspects of her approach.
